Ely Township - Greenwood Reservoir |
In 1973 the Escanaba River was dammed seven miles southwest of Ishpeming. The result is a wilderness lake with over 30 miles of shorelines and about 25 islands. Access to its treasures is usually by boat. The only official boat launch is at the DNR site at Nob Point. To avoid westerly winds, and to shorten the trip to better canoe waters, canoeists frequently put in near Anne Island. They follow the "nature center" road north for nearly a half mile putting in at Sun Fish Bay. The water depths are quite changeable. This map is not intended for navigation. Sport fishing is a major activity. Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Crappie lead the list. There is an occasional Walleye taken from the deeper waters, while Perch, Bluegills and Sunfish are found in over two dozen bays and coves.
