Sands Parks and Recreation
|
Sands Township is an epicenter of numerous recreational activities for both Sands and Marquette County residents as well as tourists. Sands is home to the Blueberry Ridge Ski Trail system, which is one of the best public cross country ski trails in the state. It has been the birthing grounds of many beginner Nordic skiers and has even been the training grounds for Olympians. Sands Township has also been popular with the increasing road cycling community as well as mountain bikers. Horseback riding, snowshoeing, dog sledding, hiking, fishing, hunting, snow mobiling, and ATV riding are some of the other activities that attract recreationalists to Sands Township. The large tracts of blueberry bushes in the township also host a plethora of blueberry pickers in mid-summer. The Marquette County fairgrounds is also located in Sands Township, just south of the new township park. The new Sands Township park will be centrally located for many of these recreational activities and will provide a great location to meet and spend time with friends and family.

Most citizens are unaware that the township has a Recreation plan and formal plans for a Township park complex(see below document.) The new park complex will be located adjacent to the Township office to the south (south of the crossroads of Country Road 480 and M-553). Recently Sands Township had the honor of being one of two U.P. communities to be awarded the National Park Service Land and Water Conservation Grant for $95,500. This a matching grant, which means that the grant recipient has to match the award amount.Unfortunately, this grant only funds about half of the planned Township Park. The two tennis courts, one of two basketball courts, the playground, pit toilets, and half of the parking lot were funded in this grant. The major features of the park that were not funded include the baseball field, soccer field, the pavilion, and the other parking lot. The Sands Parks and Recreation Auxiliary was formed to seek donations to help complete the park complex. If you are interested in donating to help complete our park, please contact Michelle Redlon at 346-9956 (maredlon@hotmail.com)
