Mission
The Republic Area Historical Society, a non-profit organization, was created in September 1992. It was incorporated in February 1993.
The sole purpose of the organization is to collect, preserve, display and distribute historical knowledge of the Republic area.
The groups seeks to provide various programs, displays, exhibits and workshops for the public, which will help to develop an understanding of our heritage. This is accomplished through resource people, oral history, research and the collection of artifacts and photographs.
Future plans include a museum curriculum to help school students understand historical aspects of this area. We will use our museum to display the economic, social, occupational, and cultural history of Republic.
Facilities
- The Pascoe House Museum - Opened on August 24, 2002, introduced the public to our period house museum. Located at 114 Cedar Street in South Republic. Hours are 1:00 - 3:00 PM Thursday, Saturday & Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
- Republic Mine Observation Site - Overlooking the open pit mine in Republic, just south of Munson Park. Raised platform offers impressive views of the Mine property and Republic area. Six etched signs describe the mining process.
Historical Synopsis
The Republic area is at the northern end of M-95 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Most of the area is located along the scenic Michigamme River, an old Indian canoe route from Lake Superior to Lake Michigan.
The creation of the Republic Iron Company in 1870 was quickly followed by the founding of the town of Republic, also called Iron City. Peter Pascoe, a Cornish tin miner, was the first mine Captain and town founder. The rich ore deposits along with lumbering made the area a booming metropolis by the turn of the century. The mine closed in 1928. Cleveland Cliffs, Inc. reopened and expanded the mine in the 1950's and moved part of the town five miles south to a former potatoe field. The mine closed for good in 1981.
