RSVP supports senior volunteers through recognition events, insurance, training, and meal and mileage reimbursement, if needed. Special programs offered include: RSVP Crafters: Volunteers who share their talents and skills in making items that are donated into the community. Peer Prevention Players: Volunteers who address prevention issues through community presentation using script reading and audience interaction. TRIAD: An effort between local law enforcement and RSVP to enhance services for seniors through information exchange, activities, and educational programs. In-Home Support: Trains and supports volunteers to provide support for isolated seniors and/or caregivers. Volunteers offer transportation for medical appointments, telephone reassurance, respite care, and friendly visiting.

Persons seeking assistance to remain at home from UPCAP's program are provided a wide variety of options and choices. However, the program is not designed to replace family caregiving responsibilities. Rather, the options provided are designed to assist family members to continue providing care. The programs are designed to serve anyone in need of long-term care such as nursing home regardless of income. UPCAP's Marquette office is available to assist anyone living in Marquette or Alger County.

These programs provide a hot, nutritious noon meal for senior citizens aged 60 or older and their spouses (regardless of age). Contributions are accepted/encouraged, but not required. A $2 donation is suggested. Guests under age 60 must pay $4.50 per meal. The "Senior Dining" Program serves meals in a group setting at 15 locations within Marquette County (including senior centers, township halls, churches, senior housing developments, etc.). The "Meals on Wheels" Program is for medically and/or emotionally homebound seniors. To make referrals for home delivered meals, or to obtain a listing of congregate locations and serving times, contact the office.

The Commission provides county millage, federal, state, and local funds and technical assistance to the multipurpose Senior Centers, the Senior Nutrition Program, and other senior groups and programs in the county. The following services are also provided: Alzheimer's Demonstration Program (ADP): A program designed to help meet the needs of both the person suffering with dementia and the caregiver, so that care can be provided in the home as long as possible. Home Care Specialist (HCS): Trained and/or nurse's aide certified selected persons who are available for service to thoe needing help in the home to maintain independent living. ID & Discount Card: This program allows seniors 60 years of age and older to receive a laminated photo ID card that enables them to take advantage of discounts that are offered by participating businesses within Marquette County. Michigan Emergency Pharmaceutical Program for Seniors (MEPPS): Provides short-term financial assistance to help older persons of limited means to meet an immediate need for prescribed medications. Respite Care: A program designed to allow caregivers time away from the responsibilities of caring for a frail, elderly family member. The program helps to pay for the cost of hiring temporary care so that caregivers can tend to their personal needs and renew their energy for the caregiving task. Respite Caregiver Training: Specialized training for caregivers to make it easier to cope with the special needs of their loved ones. Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP): Volunteers age 55 and better are matched according to their skills and interests with public and non-profit agencies and schools in Mqt. Co. Volunteers choose jobs and schedules based on their own interests and available time. The Forsyth Township Senior Center aids with special problems that occur with aging to keep older persons as functioning members of the community for as long as they are willing and able. There is no charge, but donations are accepted.

Information and referral is provided to seniors and families of seniors. The information provided ranges from government funded programs to community activities.

A monthly newsletter is mailed on request.

Some of the programs offered include:

Reassurance and Visiting Services: Includes telephone calls and/or home visits to people 60 and over who are homebound or ailing.

Homemaker Services: Includes light housekeeping and shopping for elderly handicapped people.

Outreach Services: Provided for those who cannot leave their homes or are isolated.

Shopping Service: Provided weekly.

Counseling: Provided to senior citizens and families to aid in easing age-related problems.

Health: Work with area health agencies to provide a variety of health screenings (hearing, blood pressure, foot care, etc.). Refer to homebound.

Recreation: Dance/exercise, swimming, cards, crafts, dances, potlucks, and other special events.

The Center advocates and provides services to seniors 60+ residing in the city of Ishpeming, and the townships of Ishpeming, Tilden, Ely, Humboldt, Champion, Michigamme, and Republic. The purpose of these services is to help seniors remain living safely, independently, and with dignity in their own homes. There is no charge for any of these services, but donations are always appreciated. Services include: Outreach to isolated and homebound seniors. Case coordination & support including a comprehensive assessment of a senior's needs, arrangement and quality assurance of services through the Center, and referrals to other agencies when needed. Alzheimer's Demonstration Program offers special services and support to those who suffer from Alzheimer's or other dementia and to their caregivers. Mental Health Outreach for special problems and concerns that seniors may have. Financial Management assistance with Medicare and insurance billings; household budgeting, check book reconciliation, state tax and tax credit form preparation, and referrals to other assistance programs. Tax Counseling for the Elderly is a program sponsored by the IRS. Trained volunteers provide assistance with the preparation of Federal and State Income Tax forms and State Tax credit forms. Caregiver Support Group provides a confidential setting where problems, concerns, information, and feelings can be discussed and exchanged. Legal Clinic on the first Monday of the month where local attorneys will answer legal questions and concerns. Escort Services provide door-to-door escort service for medical appointments. Homemaking provides light, everyday household cleaning and hopping services. Chore Service to help with routine maintenance tasks including snow shoveling, grass cutting, smoke alarm installation, etc. Health screenings including Blood Pressure Clinic, Footcare Clinic, and Diabetes Clinic. Recreation including dessert socials, bingo, meals, educational and special interest programs, and other special events advertised in monthly newsletter. Senior Meal Program is a congregate meal site for the AMCAB Senior Nutrition Program. A $2 donation is suggested for seniors, $4 for non-seniors.

Some of the activities offered are singing, table games, conversation, crafts, and picnics. A nutritious snack is served each afternoon. A program for those with Alzheimer's and Related Disorders is offered one day per week. All persons over 55 who meet the guidelines are eligible to attend. A nominal charge of $2.50 for a half day is made to cover program expenses. In cases of financial need, other arrangements can be made. (Severe physical and mental handicaps may preclude participation).
