The Michigan Land Use Institute has joined the Shoreline Habitat and Species Protection Program, a multi-partner effort to help safeguard the Great Lakes coastline. Their role is to develop a model zoning ordinance, as well as educational materials, in order to strengthen local protection.
The project is coordinated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and funded by the Great Lakes Protection Fund, an endowment established in 1989 by seven Midwest states to protect the Great Lakes ecosystem. It brings together government, academic, and nonprofit groups, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at the University of Minnesota, the Nature Conservancy in East Lansing, MI, Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in Paradise, MI, and the Leelanau Conservancy in Leland, MI.
